January 19, 2021 Ranking (Miss Vickie's)
Ranking of Miss Vickie's Flavors as of January 19, 2021
First off, thank you to all my subscribers, I would not have made it to week 2 without you. We started the first week of chiprankings with a well-known and well-loved brand (Kettle Brand) which sparked a ~heated~ debate around the ranking of Jalapeno and Honey Dijon. Check it out if you haven’t already - you’ll never guess which flavor is number 1:
For Week 2, I will be ranking Miss Vickie’s (and yes, I linked this to the Canadian site on purpose).
There are three important things to remember in this week’s ranking:
The worst Miss Vickie’s flavor is better than the best Kettle Brand flavor.
The quality of Miss Vickie’s flavors available in Canada is infinitely better than those in the US. This means that anytime you find yourself in Canada you need to stock up on Miss Vickie’s (read: this is the top reason to come to the Farewell Summer Sizzler post-COVID). Also, I believe you only need to declare goods above $800 when coming back into the US, which means you can safely bring back ~200 bags of Miss Vickie’s!
Even the inferior US Miss Vickie’s flavors are not easy to come by in the US, but there are two places I have found them so far: your local Subway sandwich shop OR you can get them delivered to your door from snacks.com.
With that, find below the rankings of Miss Vickie’s chips (I will specify flavors available only in Canada):
Sweet Chili and Sour Cream (Canada only).
Sweet Chili and Sour Cream (Canada only). Yes, this chip takes the #1 and #2 spot. This is the best flavor of kettle chip I have ever had. It starts off sweet, followed by a small kick of chili, and ends with a satisfying creamy sour cream.
Lime and Black Pepper (Canada only). There is truly nothing like it. I mean, who would have thought to combine black pepper and lime? The answer is Miss Vickie, a true legend.
Jalapeno (Canada and US). This a great Jalapeno chip because it actually tastes like Jalapeno, not like someone lit my tongue on fire. This doesn’t mean it’s not spicy, it has a great spice, but you can also taste the Jalapeno.
Sea Salt and Malt Vinegar (Canada Only). You can find Sea Salt and Vinegar in the US, but the malt here is important. The malt cuts the standard vinegar taste a bit, making this version much better than regular sea salt and vinegar.
Balsamic Vinegar and Sweet Onion (Canada Only). I’m not as familiar with this flavor, but I do remember enjoying it.
Sour Cream and Caramelized Onion (Canada Only). Someone hired a brand manager who said “Caramelized” will increase sales. Honestly, they were right because that’s why I tried this flavor in the first place, but be warned, this is just a fancy way to say “Sour Cream and Onion”. I was too disappointed in this realization to enjoy eating this flavor again.
Sea Salt (Canada and US). The other flavors are way more exciting, but the classic sea salt never lets you down.
Harvest Cheddar (Canada and US - via snacks.com). I have yet to find a kettle chip brand that can do a cheddar flavor justice. If you want some good cheddar, go for Goldfish, Cheez-Its or Baked Cheetos.
Flavors still to try:
Honey Dijon: I haven’t seen this one in stores anywhere. Might be a catfish. I have extremely high expectations for this given the Kettle Brand Honey Dijon.
Sweet Southern BBQ, Smokehouse BBQ, Applewood Smoked BBQ: What is UP with all of these BBQ flavors. I need to familiarize myself with them more to provide a formal review.
Harvest Cheddar and Herbs. Perhaps this will be the cheddar flavored kettle chip that succeeds.
For some background, Miss Vickie’s was started in 1987 by Vickie Kerr, who wanted better chips for her family. So she made them with fresh potatoes from her family’s third generation farm. To this day, they’re still kettle cooked using select Canadian potatoes. While I only commented on the flavors, I think what makes Miss Vickie’s undeniably better than Kettle Brand can also be attributed to the quality of the chip itself, which is why this snippet of background is crucial.
Always open to debates on the above. Remember to subscribe and leave a comment below!
Wow, the US has been deprived!!
